Our Button-Down

A tribute to an American classic. Inspired by vintage archive pieces from our favorite 1980s and 1990s designs, our button-down was crafted with absolute attention to the details that made this shirt so iconic. Hence the full cut, large armholes, and the infamous collar roll.

HISTORY

Button-down shirts have a rich history that dates back to 1896 when Henry and John Brooks first manufactured and sold them in New York City. Popularized by Ivy League college students in the mid-20th century, this garment became an American menswear staple thanks to its robust and durable fabric, chill and refined sporting look, and iconic collar roll.

However, in the late 20th century, the fashion industry began to prioritize innovation over tradition. Wrinkle-free fabrics and synthetic blends replaced the traditional slubby texture of Oxford fabrics. Collars, cuffs, and front plackets were fused with glue, making those initially soft parts ever so stiff. The production process was outsourced overseas, and the classic button-down shirt became a shell of its former self.

Some stubborn aficionados refused to resign and decided to make their own, faithful to the shirt’s heritage.

We are one of them.

Our shirt uses a traditional yarn with finer cottons woven by Albiate 1830 in Italy, the very same they supplied to Brooks Brothers in the 1960’s. Based in northern Italy, our manufacturer is a family-owned business operating since 1969. The company spins its own yarns, manufactures its own cotton fabric, and makes high-end finished shirts, allowing us great flexibility to create our own model.

SIZING

Measurements are taken laid flat and closed.

• Shoulders: measured on the shoulder seam from side to side.
• Chest: measured from one armpit to the other.
• Back: measured from below the collar all the way down to the hem.
• Sleeves: measured from the shoulder seam to the end of the cuff.
